OLD CEMETERY ON WROCŁAWSKA STREET IN OPOLE
At the end of 1813, due to the prevailing epidemic, a new burial site for Opole residents was urgently sought. This was no easy task due to the local terrain conditions. Only the purchase of land in Przedmieście Odrzańskie (Oder River Suburb), which did not enjoy a very good reputation at the time, made it possible to set up a new cemetery.
The controversial location next to the execution site and the city's gallows caused dissatisfaction among residents. Nevertheless, the cemetery was opened as early as December 1813, intended as a burial place for Opole residents of the Evangelical and Catholic faiths. This vast Opole burial ground, which was expanded many times and only part of which has survived to this day, was in use for over 120 years. To be continued...
