MONUMENT TO THE FIGHTERS FOR THE POLISHNESS OF OPOLE SILESIA
The Monument to the Fighters for the Polishness of Opole Silesia, commonly referred to as the
"Opole Nike" or "woman on a bull", stands in a representative spot at Opole's Wolności Square. Work on the construction of the monument began in the 1960s, with the ceremonial unveiling taking place in 1970.
Initially, it was dedicated to the Freedom Fighters of Opole Silesia, but later its meaning was changed to commemorate the Silesian insurgents. The creator of this enormous, 15-metre-high monument is Jan Borowczyk from Opole. About half a tonne of cement, 6 tonnes of aggregate, 1,200 kg of reinforcement, 200 kg of nails and 15 tonnes of plaster were used in its construction. In recent years, thanks to renovation work, the "woman on a bull" has been cleaned and restored. It is not only the venue for the most important regional and municipal celebrations, but also a meeting place for many Opole residents.
