MUSEUM OF OPOLE SILESIA IN OPOLE
Established in 1900 as the City Museum, the facility has over 100 years of tradition. It is a fascinating place, both because of its vast archaeology, ethnography, history, nature and art history collections and because of the historic buildings in which it is housed. The main exhibition building is the extensive Baroque complex of the former Jesuit college. Permanent exhibitions are also housed in the so-called new exhibition pavilion. The exhibitions are devoted to such topics as the ethnography of the Opole region, the history of Opole and the region, Upper Silesian ceramics and Tułowice porcelain, as well as Jesuit pharmacology. You can also see a model of Opole from the mid-18th century and the Gallery of 19th and 20th Century Polish Painting with works by such masters as Matejko, Kossak, Chełmoński, Malczewski, Tetmajer and Witkacy. An unquestionable highlight of the contemporary painting collection is the collection of works by Jan Cybis, which has been in the making since the 1970s and is currently the largest in the country. It is displayed in a separate exhibition in a former 19th-century inn, which now serves as a museum gallery.
The Museum also owns a classicist tenement house from the late 19th century, where you can feel the atmosphere of old city life. It features flats in various styles from different periods, ranging from the early 20th century to the 1960s.
