ŻYROWA PALACE

Constructed between 1631 and 1644, this Baroque palace stands as one of the grandest early Baroque edifices in the Opole region. Over the centuries, however, it has undergone numerous modifications, often to adapt the structure to new functions. For instance, it served as headquarters for insurgents during the Third Silesian Uprising. During the Second World War, the palace housed a military archive of the Third Reich. While the structure itself escaped war damage, its interiors were subsequently looted and vandalised.

After the war, the estate was nationalised. A State Agricultural Farm (PGR Żyrowa) was established here, and the palace was taken over by the health service, which opened a children’s sanatorium, later converted into a preventorium for children at risk of tuberculosis. The facility closed in 1982 and stood abandoned for several years, unguarded and falling into ruin. Currently, this four-winged building is slowly regaining its former splendour; however, as it is private property, it can only be admired from the outside.
