ROGÓW OPOLSKI CASTLE

This Renaissance-Classicist castle was erected in its current form by the Rogojski family at the turn of the 17th century. From 1765 until the Second World War, it remained in the possession of the Haugwitz family. In the post-war period, the building was utilised as a kindergarten and a grain store. The castle regained its splendour after becoming the property of the Voivodeship Public Library, which established its Department of Historic Collections here. It is these treasures of European literature and iconography that attract so many tourists. Among the most valuable items are a manuscript written on grey parchment dating from 1324 and a map of Silesia compiled by Sebastian Münster in 1545. The castle is encircled by a beautiful English-style park, which also houses the Neo-Gothic ‘House Under the Rooster’ (Dom pod Kogutem), offering guest accommodation.
