PACZKÓW - THE POLISH CARCASSONNE

The preserved medieval defensive walls, in places 7-metres high, surrounding the city with a regular oval of 1,2 km in length, 19 fortified towers and 3 gate towers (Wrocław, Kłodzko, and Ząbkowice towers), as well as the Nysa gate are the biggest attractions of Paczków, founded in 1254, proudly called the "Polish Carcassone".

The uniqueness of the buildings and the city walls makes to possible to feel a truly medieval atmosphere here. Paczków is awarded the status of Polish Historic Monument, the most important honour in the classification of Polish monuments. The dominant feature of Paczków and a symbol of its fortified character is the Church of John the Evangelist. In the 16th century it was partially converted into a defensive structure, which fact can still be seen today. During a walk, it is worth seeing the shrouded in legends and mysteries Executioner's House. According to legends, it is here that the town executioner lived with his family for hundreds of years. Also worth seeing in Paczków are the Paczków Town Hall with its tower open to the public and equipped with panoramic telescopes, the historic townhouses in the market square with a medieval street layout, the Gas Industry Museum - a museum unique in Europe, with the largest

collection of gas meters in Europe - or the Metamuseum of motorisation. In the summer, towards the end of July, seeing the Aeropicnic and the Polish hot air balloon championships is a must!
