BOLKO BATHING AREA IN OPOLE
A 10-minute bike ride along the convenient Oder River bike path takes you from the city center to the Bolko Bathing Area, located far from the hustle and bustle of the city. Revitalized a few years ago with EU funds, today it boasts a wide beach, a pier, pedal boat rentals, barbecue areas and sanitary facilities. During the season, it is, of course, guarded, so you can safely spend time there. A real highlight for diving enthusiasts is the sunken excavator at the bottom. The area is surrounded by abundant green spaces.
Nature lovers will encounter nesting water birds: gulls, ducks, grebes and coots. Beavers can also be found here, which make their nests in the bend near the beach, where they build their lodges. If it weren't for the flood of 1997, the Bolko Bathing Area likely wouldn't exist. The flood flooded a massive marl quarry belonging to the Bolko cement plant, ending its nearly 100-year existence.
An interesting point is that, during World War II, English and American prisoners of war worked in the quarries.
